Patching - fantasies or good things ?

Post by Nelsona »

Known or not... Me and the rest of you might own some bugged hardware called CPU aka Central Process Unit aka Micro-Processor which is the heart of a Computer.
Intel ARM AMD types are flawed by default making possible system attacks.
They went to develop patches in purpose to prevent memory corruptions even with the price of a lower processing speed - average of performance loss.

The problem of these patches were coming with an advice: Do not Install them - Intel patches. Why ? Because now memory is not read with 128 kbps or such (if I remember correctly) the flaw went to screwing with a few GB/s by directly writing in memory all kinda funky stuff.
Actually Linus Torvald - the creator of Linux was complaining about solutions and... he was not that happy as I could figure in that public debate...
Spoiler
It looks like there are problems in solving these issues due to flawed-by-default architectures.
Machines used in important domains will have security holes by default. Now let me know how goes privacy things in such case, Banks. Hospitals, Various Sales, etc, etc. I would not allow my life to be managed by a computer - like an old man said and he said well.

Bumping ball with small news.
Some Intel based CPUs have to be replaced physically because patching will not be entirely helpful making machines still vulnerable. For Spectre vulnerability things do looks a bit harder, AMD do seems to camp in this stage, I'm afraid about a failure toward this problem... mitigations (fixing it's impossible due to hardware flaws) will get late or heck knows if it's not only a waste of time.

Bump... I gotta show you something.

Gibson Research Corporation delivered a small "package". I'm talking about a small executable file intended to test your hardware (yes, it's hardware default issue) if has a MITIGATION (not a fix - software cannot fix hardware) accordingly. The "toy" is here at the bottom of page.

:lying mode on
"Unfortunately" for these scientists - hardware developers, Nelsona has a solution for these issues, actually Nelsona could stop these pretty quickly.
Solution is simple than you can ever dream about. Locate the electricity cable heading to the power supply of your PC machine, unplug it. I'll bet on 10$ that issue will be gone. SOLVED !

Return to subject "trash in da house" - I missed under-bed checks :( :
Check this and don't get mad yet, I think we are not done...
